What Reddit Recall does
Reddit Recall is a browser extension that builds a personal, searchable archive of the Reddit threads and comments you visit. It runs entirely inside your browser. It is an independent, unofficial tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Reddit, Inc.
What data is collected
When you visit a Reddit thread, or right-click a Reddit link to archive it directly, Reddit Recall reads the page content that is already visible to you or fetches the equivalent public data using your existing Reddit session, and saves it to a local archive on your device. This includes:
- Post and comment text, scores, and timestamps
- Usernames and subreddit names
- Images and gallery links attached to posts
- If you choose to enter it in Settings, your own Reddit username, used only to recognize your own posts and comments in your archive
If you add notes to a thread, comment, or person in the review portal, that note text is also saved to your local archive.
Where it's stored
Everything is stored locally in your browser, using standard browser storage (IndexedDB and chrome.storage.local). None of it is transmitted to Reddit Recall's developer, to Reddit, or to any other third party. There is no backend server. Uninstalling the extension, or clearing the extension's site data, permanently deletes the archive.
You can export a full backup of your archive as a JSON file at any time from the review portal's Settings page. That export lives wherever you choose to save it, and is entirely under your control.
What Reddit Recall does not do
- No account or sign-in is required or offered
- No analytics, tracking pixels, or usage telemetry
- No advertising, and no data is ever sold or shared with advertisers
- No data is transmitted to any server operated by Reddit Recall's developer, because none exists
Why each permission is needed
- Access to reddit.com (including old.reddit.com and every other reddit.com subdomain, no other site): to read thread and comment content as you browse, and to show the on-page archive indicator.
- Storage: to save your archive and settings locally in your browser.
- Web navigation: to detect when you've opened a Reddit thread so it can be archived automatically.
- Context menus: to power the right-click "Archive this thread" option on links.
- Alarms: to periodically re-check threads you're following for new activity, and to run retention cleanup on a schedule.
- Notifications: to let you know if a capture fails and needs your attention.
Retention and deletion
By default, your archive is kept forever. You can turn on automatic retention limits (30 days, 6 months, 1 year, or 5 years) in Settings. Any automatic deletion has a 24-hour cancelable cooldown before it happens, and you can delete individual threads, comments, notes, or your entire archive manually at any time.
Children's privacy
Reddit Recall is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect data about children. Its use is subject to Reddit's own age requirements for accessing reddit.com.
